Postcards From The Coast
Wilderness, abandonment and an unforgiving sea air is portrayed in my own collection of ‘postcards’ from coastal locations, notably the Île d’Oléron.
The Île d’Oléron is situated in the Atlantic ocean, just off the south west coast of France, in the department of Charente-Maritime. Also known as “La Lumineuse”, because of its unique light, it is famous for its oyster farming and brightly painted ‘cabanes’ (fishing huts).
This traditional profession is still very much in evidence and the raw landscape of this industry sits side by side with the stunning natural panoramas of coastline, marshes and canals, each one dependant on the other.
In or out of season this beautiful landscape never ceases to provide me with inspiration for my Oléron paintings !
