Back from Sea

Lavender skies and turquoise creeks jostle to shine the brightest on a late spring afternoon. But the moody sky is obliged to give way to the luminous water that boasts brilliant reflections of the oyster port of Arceau. The characteristic cobweb of telegraph wires lace their way across the composition, like jumbled staves from a tradition Oléronais song.

Artist’s notes :
It is only recently that I discovered the port of Arceau on the french island of Oléron. This little gathering of dwellings and cabins is the one place tourism has left behind. It doesn’t boast coloured cabins and is slightly off the beaten track. Long may it stay that way. I wanted to capture it in all its authenticity before time caught up.

This painting is finished to the sides in black linen tape and has fixings in place, ready to hang, making framing optional.
