Although many wooden cabins on the île d’Oléron now house artists and artisans in the summer months, a few of thèse gloriously coloured buildings remain in the hands of the oyster farmers, having been handed down through the générations. The origin of the bright colours comes from the paint used on the original oyster fishing boats. Any paint left over was used on the cabins. As time passed any colour of left over paint was used and some cabins ended up with an array of rainbow colours !
Artist’s notes :
I wanted to paint these cabins because they are still owned by oyster farmers and the wonderful colours were so joyful. I also fancied having a go at turning what is traditionally considered a pretty ugly concrete wall, into an abstract textured work of art ! I was really taken by the subtle reflections of the cabins in the water below.
This painting is finished to the sides in black linen tape and has fixings in place, ready to hang, making framing optional.
