An evening out in Bordeaux and I am looking at the wonderful light and shadow created by the large scale columns at the Grand Theatre. In turning the corner I catch a couple in close embrace. The magnitude and romance of the architecture that surrounded them seemed to intensify their intimate moment of passion. I hurriedly took a photo before they had time to realise anybody was watching them. It is these snatched moments that often inspire my work, fleeting overlaps of lives that brush their existence with one another without any long duration.
Artist’s notes:
I work in oils, glazing layer upon layer until I reach the depth of colour and intensity that I am looking for. Light plays an important part in my work and I get excited by deep contrasts and the play of light on buildings and landscapes. The oil allows me to play with surface textures, sweeping on undiluted strokes of paint in one area and allowing the medium thinned oil to seemingly melt and run off the page in another.
