Between Reality and Dreams
Still lifes, imagined scenes and studies of nature converge here in a quiet dialogue between what is seen and what is dreamed.
Rackowe has stated that she is never short of inspiration and this shows in the diversity of her subject matter. She is constantly observing the world around her and the perception of scenes and objects connected to our daily lives. She has often said that at times she would quite like to know how others see the world, simply, just for what it is on the surface, without the need to look so deeply. But for her the visual world before her comes with constant interrogation, exploration, interpretation and a study of new ideas.
Of course light is a key element and how it falls onto or changes a subject matter certainly influences her desire to paint it. She examines the shadows and reflections as well as “dissecting colours”, a term she uses to find the key contributors that make up one particular overall perceived hue. Coupled with her love of books and music, each of these components contributes to the evolution of her work, be they everyday objects or an imagination fired by stories, myths or musical compositions.
