Blue House

Nestled in the remote Auvergne countryside a weathered blue house sits at the brow of a gentle hill, perpendicular to a country lane. Its timeworn façade and unconventional shape exude a sense of mystery and intrigue. Just behind, the hill drops steeply, revealing a small cottage, its slate tiles gleaming in the sun. From here the valley is hidden, the viewer’s eye being taken directly to the other side, higher up, off into the distance.

In the foreground, trees, grasses and wild flowers all jostle together beneath a vast expanse of blue sky, adorned by billowing clouds that dance lazily across the horizon. Amidst the eerily quiet scene, an electricity pole punctuates the landscape, the cables cutting across the sky; a subtle reminder of the impact of modernity on a landscape that has existed for centuries.

“Blue House” blends figuration and abstraction with the use of texture and glazing techniques, allowing the intrigue to continue from subject to medium.
